PARKOUR GUIDE · Children and parents

There is no single birthday that makes every child ready for the same parkour class. Age is a practical way to organise groups, but the child's needs and the teaching approach also matter. Ask about the specific class rather than looking for one number.

Ask who the class is designed for

One children's class may focus on play and basic movements, while another expects greater independence. Ask how the coach demonstrates tasks, organises waiting time and supports children who find group instructions difficult to follow.

Describe your child without promising more than they can manage. It is entirely reasonable to ask whether parents can observe the first session.

    Notice your child's experience

Does your child want to come back? Can they find an adult to ask? Do they get a chance to repeat something they have managed? These questions are more useful than comparing their jumps with an older child's.

A child may need several gentle introductions. This does not necessarily mean a lack of courage; the surroundings and expectations may still feel new.

    Plan the practical details

Choose clothing that fits properly now. Trousers dragging over shoes do not become better training wear because your child might grow into them. Try knee lifts and a gentle squat together.

Agree on a simple drop-off routine and a way to tell the coach if your child needs a break. Follow the class's own age and participation requirements.

    Questions and answers

Is a class for older children better if my child is brave?

Not automatically. Courage is only one part of being able to participate in a group and understand the tasks.

Can we start at home first?

Playing with simple floor movements can be a starting point. Avoid building challenging obstacles to test whether your child is ready.
